SILVER : STERLING, OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE, SILVER PLATE
We carry a wide range of pieces from England from the less expensive silver plate period, covering the 19th century, together with examples of Georgian sterling silver. Our stock includes candlesticks, candelabra, ink stands, salvers and trays, epergnes and centerpieces, vases and many other useful gift and decorative items.
The warm glow of silver has been part of the decorative arts for many centuries. Right through the 18th century, Georgian England crafted wonderful examples and at the same time, managed to produce a wide range of items for the normal home. The sterling standard at 925/1000, gave enough hardness to make it decorative and useful within the home. In the late 18th century old sheffield plate ( silver on copper ), became a more affordable alternative in the home. By the 1840s silver plate (pure silver electro plate ) was introduced, lead by Elkington and Co. amongst others
